in my own life: merry little lights

the tiny home makeovers continue.
i love taking one small thing, changing or improving it,
and sitting back to enjoy how the small thing
makes a big difference.

so without further ado, i bring you
my merry little lights.

christmas light alternative: i stuffed some of the lights into a couple infrequently-used mason-jar glasses i have, added festive party glasses to the display, and --- voila! --- instant kitchen nightlight. this might be my favorite original decorating idea ever... likely i'm not the first person in the world to do this, but i've never seen it done before!

a new arrangement: before, a string of lights was draped over the bookcase, illuminating the patient spines of Auden, Dickinson, and Eliot. this time around, i started the trail of stars by the front door (just out of view to the left), strung them above a previously-dark corner, and tucked them into some vintage boxes on top of the bookcase, after which they cascade down the wall into a large white bowl with a delicate grey damask pattern painted on the inside. it's like a non-traditional lamp --- again, a new lighting concept for me that i haven't seen before! i tucked some of my favorite postcards from friends into the cascading constellation of lights on the wall. instant loveliness!

it IS early for Christmas decorations and the general surge of consumerism that overtakes the world during this season, but i never think it's too early to look around and appreciate the beautiful, sparkling things in your world. what little thing can you do to put a little shimmer in the ordinary, often-overlooked corners of your home? who is important to you and how can you show it?

these are the things i'm thinking about as i drive home at night and see the neighborhoods slowly overcome with lights, wreaths, and lit-up reindeer. there are only a few overachieving homeowners in my neighborhood who have put up holiday decorations, and while part of me thinks it's ridiculous, another part of me finds it kind of cozy.

shh, don't tell.

happy monday to you . . .

brilliant.

i love your christmas light obsession.

i need to pull mine out. i think i'll send M down to the depths of the basement to retrieve my "christmas decorations" tub when he's off on wednesday.

do send him down! you won't regret it. these little lights soften the arrival of winter, turning every corner into a dreamy, icelike spot. it's true - i'm obsessed.
