AT: steal my heart

Apartment Therapy is a blessing and a curse; with somewhere around 40 posts per day, it's constantly clogging my "to be seen / pored & drooled over" list. combine that with the fact that i know most of the contributors are dashing off post after post with image after gorgeous image and link after alluring link from their unbelievably hip home offices, and, well, there's a recipe for envy. the greatest thing (in my opinion) about Apartment Therapy is the house tours. if you haven't ever visited AT, may i suggest that now might be the time to venture over for the first time? don't be put off by its initial cluttered appearance, which does take some getting used to. if you're going to frequent the site, you have to have high capacity for filtering what you encounter. if you know you're easily overwhelmed / irritated by extraneous ads and a plethora of patterns and colors, maybe AT isn't for you.

that being said, here are a few photos from 2 house tours i've really liked this past week . . .

the first 3 photos are from Laure's (an AT writer) 500-ish square foot apartment in Venice, CA. i'm a girl who lives alone and love to see what other solitary gals like myself do when left to their own devices.

i LOVE this home work space (thus the label {"home"work} --- yes, i'm a dork) within its own alcove. i also love the mirror and the fact that it's a white palette. i wonder what it would feel like to work in a place that's clean --- not just tidy, but without visual clutter built into its landscape (i'm eyeing the multi-colored, speckled laminate countertop of my desk as i type this). i also love the cherry blossoms on the calendar - if i'm squinting right, it's for the month of February. how romantic.

i find this little nook in the bathroom so appealing. first of all, i've noticed it's all the rage to hang mirrors / pictures / other wall art like this, from a knob with a chain or ribbon. second of all, i love the romantic, vanity-like feel of the small space with its drawers and specific objects chosen for the surface of the cabinet. it gives me this nostalgic, feminine vibe - i can see myself getting ready for a night out in this nook, half-dressed, Frou Frou playing in the background.

thirdly, what's NOT to love about this bedside space? the photo has a great backdrop in the late-afternoon sun slanting through, illuminating the space and setting it afire. i also love the small white tray which corrals the other items on the table, providing a place for random objects that remains orderly. but my favorite part? if you know me, you know i COVET that Eiffel Tower (Tour d'Eiffel) lamp base.

so those are some tidbits from Laure's house tour. the 2 pictures below are from Megan and Pete's (i think those were the names...those are the right first letters, i know that much) place in Echo Park (admittedly i have no idea where that is, and i don't really care enough to look it up). i love the light through the place, the HOT PINK WALLPAPER, and the pillows with the dark pink dot-vine design you can glimpse on the couch. i also love the hardwood floors and the flat-screen TV that's tucked away to the left of that open door (out of sight in this photo).

this is M&P's bedroom. i won't sully the simplicity and beauty of this space with my blabbering words. but really . . . just look at it (and click to enlarge for the entire effect).

that's what i've gleaned from the (large) daily dose of AT i've had so far today - ah, yes, in the time it took me to write this post, they've chalked up 7 more entries. that's my cue to sign off.

just one random question before i go: do you prefer a bed close to the ground like M&P's, or one that's higher up? something about the low rider approach seems fun and sleepover-ish, but i wonder if a low bed is harder to hoist oneself out of in the morning . . . as opposed to a higher one that can be crankily fallen out of?

(not a morning person,)

You would find the pink-wallpaper-house, you past-pinky-addict-you!

I look at other's homework (hehe) spaces with such envy sometimes, all pristine and clutter-free. As much as I love white (yes, it is my favorite) I simply can NEVER just stick to that alone. It starts with a little bit of turquoise here, then a little splash of orange there, then a huge dose of chartreuse, then, well, I am just a colorphile.

Enough said.

These are lovely.

plume: i KNOW! it seems like something of the era where girls did their hair like YOU did at your saskatoon wedding. smoky-glass mirrors and all. singing the Fugees on karaoke with a razor-blade sore throat and all.

umber: COLORPHILE. i love your description of the slow advancement of color throughout your space. i can relate!
